A Time to be Silent

The Bible tells us that there is a time to be silent.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven . . . a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;” Ecclesiastes 3:1,8

The Bible teaches us that there are times we ought to speak (Heb. 13.16).  But it also teaches us that in some instances, or circumstances we need to be silent. If we want to serve the Lord we may be called on to do both.

Did you know that there were times Jesus was silent?

And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.” Matthew 27:12

I Peter 2:22-23 reads, “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

As Christians it is our job to show Jesus to the world (II Cor. 5.20). And sometimes in order to show Him we also need to be quiet. Does this make sense? Maybe at first glance it might not, but the Lord actually tells us in some places to be quiet. And speaking at the wrong time could be a hindrance. It is Biblical to pray for the Lord to direct our words (Ps. 19.14; Col 4. 3-4; II Thes. 3.1). And surely if we want to be the most effective witnesses for Him we need to do what He says.

Now I remember many times teaching a Sunday school lesson the little kids would interrupt and try to say something. They would have an opinion on what was being said. They wanted their voices to be heard. There is a time to ask questions, but there is a time to be silent. Like in Sunday school if we are talking while a lesson is being taught we will surely miss something. Sometimes we need to just be quiet. We need to be quiet and listen to the Spirit of God. Sometimes also us speaking can draw the attention of others off of the Lord and onto ourselves or something else. This shouldn’t be the case if we want to glorify the Lord and win souls.

In Luke 9:35 we read “And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

Sometimes bowing down and being silent is the best witness. It shows how great a God we serve!

“ . . . Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day . . . .The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” Exodus 14:13-14

Zecheriah 2:13 reads, “Be silent, O all flesh, before the Lord: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

Speaking at the wrong time or place can mess up a picture. One of the earliest things I can remember after I was saved as a child, is that I saw sin as ugly. And I know I started to see how beautiful Jesus is. Jesus should be beautiful to every saved person. Often I have thought that Jesus is like a beautiful piece of music. Like disrupting a beautiful piece of music, saying something, or doing something out of the Lord’s will disrupt the picture of how beautiful Jesus is.

There are some specific Biblical principles when we ought to keep silent.

We ought to be silent rather than speak a lie. Psalm 101:7 reads,“ He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

The Lord wants us to speak the truth. If we lie we can’t have fellowship with the Lord until we get it right with Him. And our light will never be the witness it should be until we get things right.

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:” I John 1:5-6

We should be silent when what we speak isn’t out of love. Ephesians 4:15 reads “But speaking the truth in love . . .” We need to be sure our words are out of love. Sometimes truth is painful. But it doesn’t mean that it isn’t out of love. Jesus always spoke the truth in love, and he said the following, “ [E]xcept ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Lk. 13.5).

We need to give the Lord room, and first place when we speak. John 3:30 reads,“He must increase, but I must decrease.” There is only so much time in a day. People only have so long of an attention span. I once was talking to someone, and I had the opportunity to relate what they said to the Bible. But as I wrote my response, I realized there was so much of “what I wanted to say” that there wasn’t much room for “what Jesus says”. I fixed this.

There are some specific places where the Lord just told us to “be quiet.”

The Lord wanted people in His Church to speak in a known tongue (or a language everyone knew). If someone was going to speak in an unknown language in the Church, they needed an interpreter. If they didn’t have an interpreter they were to keep silence in the Church.

If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.” I Corinthians 14:27-28

The Lord didn’t want everybody getting up and talking at once in Church.

Let all things be done decently and in order.” (I Cor.14.40). See also I Corinthians 14:23.

There is another specific command to be silent.

Earlier I wrote that that Jesus is like a beautiful piece of music. Like disrupting a beautiful piece of music, saying something, or doing something out of the Lord’s will disrupt the picture of how beautiful Jesus is.

Later studying the Bible I noticed that both times the Apostle Paul speaks of singing songs, he speaks of submission.

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Ephesians 5:19-22

See also Colossians 3:16-18.

I Timothy 2:11-13 commands, “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

If our goal is for Jesus to be seen and shown clearly, then we will have no problem with this. If that is not our goal, then we need to get right with the Lord. For a daughter of God the Lord tells us the best way to show Him is by submission and remaining silent.

These have been just a few thoughts.

God bless.

A Scripture for Today, February 24th, 2024

And ye shall keep it a feast unto the Lord seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month.

Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths:” Leviticus 23:41-42

Thrice in the year shall all your menchildren appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel.” Exodus 34:23

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up . . .

And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.” Deuteronomy 6:6-9

Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn.” Deuteronomy 25:4

Now God commanded His people in the Old Testament to study His Word, and share it with others. He commanded them not to muzzle their oxen. He also commanded them to come and appear before Him at different times during the year.

Now I ask, “If someone didn’t muzzle their ox, would that make them free not to go to appear before the Lord and worship on these feast days?” Obviously not.

Did reading and  memorizing the Scriptures make it so they don’t have to go? No. Those things are good, and were also required. But so was appearing before the Lord.

Hebrews 10:25 tells us, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Reading the Bible, and having Godly conduct in our lives outside of the house of God is a must. But God still commands us to assemble with His children to worship.

D.N. JACKSON: The Law of Separation

Hello everyone! I’m very happy to be sharing with you a transcript of an old recording of a Baptist minister: D.N. Jackson. I have used Microsoft Office 365 to transcribe the old recording, and corrected it.  The software does not always pick up older words. The Law of Moses sometimes is rendered “the thermos” etc.

I hope this is a blessing to you. It was to me!

Hello out there.I speak to you on the Law of Separation based on Deuteronomy 22:9 -11. “Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled.Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together. Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together.”

The Law of Separation between right and wrong, good and evil goes back to the Garden of Eden when the Lord gave Adam permission to eat of all the trees in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam’s transgression of the will of God in this instance reflects the contrast between the two laws.  In later years, we read of the first murder in Biblical history. Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him.God had placed the value upon the right kind of offering, which happened not to be the kind presented by Cain. Consequently, vengeance was meted out against the man in the right for the man in the wrong. This principle is seen today operative the world over. In cases too many to recount here, we see the struggle between good and evil going on in the lives of the antediluvians. So great was it on the side of evil, that God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The breakdown of the principles of righteousness at this time resulted in the judgment of the Flood being sent to cleanse the earth of sin.

One manner of the breakdown is seen in the intermarriages of the sons of God with the daughters of men. The sons of God with the descendants of Seth, who stood as a representative of the Godly people, and the daughters of man with the wicked female characters of the line of Cain. It meant the destruction of the sanctity of the home.Years following the flood, we see the Lord in operation again. This time in the life of Abraham, who was called to separate himself from his land, his people and his gods. Paul testifies that  “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” Hebrews 11:8.

Some 400 years after the call of Abraham.the peculiar enactment of the Law of Separation was established by the Lord through Moses. This singular expression of it is found in the verses of our text.  But peculiar to the Mosaic law as it is not an infraction of the divine law now  to sow different kinds of seed in the same field, or plow with the ox and an ass together and wearing clothes of different kinds of threads. While the peculiar law itself is no longer in effect, the principles of it are as binding today as ever. And to these principles, we shall direct your attention.

First, there’s unmixed teaching. “Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with diverse seed.” That is two kinds of seed. The inexorable law of God is clearly seen in the prohibition against sowing the field with different kinds of seed. Like producing like, producing like was the law set up of the Lord in the dawn of creation. Here the theory of evolution is denied as we see that the Lord emphasizes this distinction of species. The New Testament echo to this is heard in the language of Paul. “All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. In the unmixed sowing, we see clearly the principle of unmixed teaching of our preaching. The power of the sower, Matthew 13:3-8 shows the sower sowing the seed, which is said to be the word of God.In this parable, the seed is the word, the soil is the hearts of people. The sower is the teacher and preacher. And the vineyard is the group of the hearts of the people. Primarily, Jesus is the teacher or sower, but all who preach his word in its purities sow good seed.

Jesus never sowed mixed seed, as it was always the pure wheat. Neither did he ever command his followers to sow mixed seed. Speaking to his Father, Jesus says,“For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.” John 17:8

Answering the Jews and the temple, Jesus said my doctrine is not mine, but His that sent me John 7:16. Preach the word is Paul’s command to Timothy, and it should be heeded by all who teach or preach today.  Contrary to the divine principle we see much mixed sewing has befouled the fields laid out in the centuries back to Christ.  Paul  declared that the mystery of iniquity was already at work in his day, and prophesied the coming of the day, when there should be a falling away from the faith as a system of teaching (I Tim. 4.1).

Scarcely had the bones of the Apostles become set to their graves, until the way of salvation had become confused in the minds of some by the introduction of baptism of regeneration.  Of all perversions of the truth that is the worst that has to do with the misguiding of people concerning their eternal welfare. Baptismal salvation became prevalent about the commencement of the 3rd century, and from it was developed infant baptism. There was a lot of mixed seeds sowed then hundreds of years after the time.  In the 19th century, one Mr. Alexander Campbell worked a theory of baptismal salvation.  And with little dignity set baptism as a condition of salvation. Even then it is mixed seed, or rather a corruption of the plan of salvation. The pure seed with regard to the way of salvation is found in Ephesians 2:8 and 10,  and we have used this passage repeatedly over this program. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

The evil effect of mixed sowing we can easily see. “Lest the fruit of thy seed which thou sow and the fruit of thy vineyard be defiled”.  . . . And a mixture of good with evil renders the good helpless and does not cleanse the bad. Defilement or confiscation is the result.  As to the way of salvation, grace and works cannot be mixed to procure it, as salvation is obtained by one with the other left out. This we read in Romans 11 and six. “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.”

As works or grace must be omitted, one of them must be omitted. Which one is it? Titus 3:5 says works play no part in one salvation. Therefore, we must conclude that salvation is wholly by grace through faith. That is the pure and unmixed seed, which will never be confiscated.

In the second place there is unmixed service. Thou shall not plough with an ox and an ass together. Service is here indicated as the working of the animals is mentioned. The reason for them not being worked together is seen in the fact the ox is a clean animal under the law and the donkey, an unclean animal.  The Mosaic Law forbade the Jews eating the flesh of the donkey while the ox was not only employed for table use, but also for sacrifice. The working of the donkey  the ox together under the same yoke suggested to the Jew under the law  a mixture of the forces of evil and good. The Lord designed that the furrow be plowed with oxen, not yolked with a donkey and sowed with unmixed seed.

This pure service we shall let picture three phases of Christian service today. The 1st is the service rendered by individual Christian.” No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Matthew 6:24.

God does not accept the service of one who undertakes to please both the Lord and Satan.  That is known in the Old Testament as Balaamism. Originated from the Prophet Balaam, who undertook to please God, and at the same time do acceptable service to the enemy of God’s people. Such service is a stench to the Lord!

In the second place there is the service rendered by ministers of the Gospel.“For it is written in the law of Moses, thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?” (I Cor. 9:9). That this is applied to ministerial service is shown by the context. “If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?” asks Paul in the same connection. The reference is to Deuteronomy 25 and 4. “Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn.” Into the Greece, Egypt and Italy, farmers made use of oxen to tread out the corn or wheat. The oxen being tied to a pole and driven around the treading floor, thus trapping the seat out of the stock heads. In some instances the oxen were muzzled to prevent them from eating as they work. “Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.” Ministers should be supported by the congregation so that they might give themselves wholly to the ministry of the word.

The Apostle Peter sounded this note clearly, when in Acts 6, they called the church together and said, “It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.”

The lesson not only stresses ministerial support, but also the cleanliness of ministerial living. Ministers of the Gospel, Profess Spokesman for God, should live blameless before the world setting an exemplary pattern as Paul admonished Timothy to be an example of the believers in word and conversation in charity, in Spirit, in faith and in purity. This means cleanliness to be sure.  The ox was a clean animal and the Mosaic law. Again we see the lesson of ministerial sacrifice taught. The ox was used as a sacrifice under the law.

One qualification of a minister as set up by the apostle Paul is that he is not to be greedy of filthy lucre, nor covetous (I Tim. 3.3). While any minister has a scriptural right to expect a decent living both in his active days and when he has laid on the shelf, he cannot be very effective as a soul winner if he’s given or giving more attention to making money than he does to the study and preaching of the Word.

Service rendered by church is the third point here. A clean Church living itself to God, giving itself wholly to God in unmixed service, is the world’s greatest and brightest lighthouse. It is truly a city set on a hill which cannot be hit.  Unmixed church service does not mean that sinners cannot attend the worship and be benefited thereby. But it does mean that a church should be composed of, and the affairs thereof run by children of God. No! Unmixed church service does not mean that sinners cannot attend. But it means that they must not control the church.

In this case one thing will always prevail. And at least two things will be excluded. The one thing is the will and worship of Christ our Savior. The other things excluded are notice: worldly entertainment. I know some of you gasped at this statement as you may think it takes entertainment to have a church going. It does . . . if it is going in the way of the world!  Then it will take wordly entertainment to keep it going. But if it is going along with Christ, the entertainment should be spiritual, wholesome and vigorously upbuilding to the moral life. When the tools of Satan are used, you need not expect much moral uplift from a church. Some of the tools thus employed are card parties, dancing, and the like. Can you imagine the Apostle Peter advertising cards and dancing on the day of Pentecost to draw the thousands he and his followers led to Christ?   While we have heard of boxing and being staged in churches, and some churches have turned over their basements to all sorts of worldly attractions. In such instances a church loses its power for God as did Lot, when he pitched his tent in Sodom.  Or as Samson lost his physical strength when he rested his head in Delilah’s lap. There must be a clear line of demarcation between the church and the world. If the church is to live as a saving instrument in the hands of God.

A church in a race with the world loses the respect of the world in the end. For a time, great crowds may may flock to it, but there they hear no real gospel, they’re not taught. they must be born of God to get to heaven. They’re not warned of their awful doom that awaits the impenitent. And when they awake to the crisis awaiting them, they stand ready to scorn the very  forces that have kept them in spiritual darkness. A man in the Armed Services coming ashore off his ship being hungry for the divine food for his soul attended a certain church, but found nothing for his soul. Yet there was plenty of entertainment. He went away disappointed and sad. He came ashore to another place, but remembering his former experience, he hesitatingly went to a church with the same name. There, however, he found the atmosphere quite different. Instead of a certain brand of entertainment, he found a spiritually minded church and a minister who preached the gospel. He was gloriously  saved and went away praising God for having found the kind of food his hungry soul craved.

But don’t misunderstand me. We must be social beings. And as we are social beings there can be clean entertainment by the people of God. I am speaking of the entertainment that emanates from the world and is patterned after the world. Then we find worldly ambitions. The church should be a place where aspiration should be raised to the skies. Not a place where tricksters take over.  A church like the temple should be cleansed of all those who use it as an organized racket.

When one unites with the.Church, for the sake of his business, he seeks to use the church as a means to wealth.  “ . . . If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”(Matt. 16.24). Then there’s corrupt living termites boring from within usually cause greater property damage  than storms that come from without.

A church overbalanced by the internal corruption is like a ship with bomb holes in it. In his first letter to the Corinthian church, Paul says, “  . . . if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.” (I Cor. 5.11). In his second letter to the same church, the apostle says “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.” (II Cor. 6.14-17). People who handle holy things should have clean hands.

And then in the last part there’s unmixed conduct. “ Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together.” We have just spoken of corrupt living inside of a church and have noticed what the divine call to a church is respecting such matters.  Now let’s take a view of the divine will concerning our individual conduct. Under the law of Moses garments of different kinds as a woollen and linen could not be worn together. The picture we get is: As the clothes which outline the body must conform to a certain regulation, our conduct which outlines the inward motives must likewise be unmixed. The priests under the Mosaic law were strictly forbidden to wear any mixture of clothes when they minister in the gates of the inner court (Ezek. 44.17).They were to wear only linen garments. As they say, people are their own unbeliever priests and have access themselves to the great high Priest Jesus Christ. As we read in Hebrews 4:14, 16.They must administer in the sanctuary of God with an even conduct before the world. Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness as we read in Psalm 132.9. As our own righteousness is as filthy rags reading  in Isaiah 64:6,  we must be clothed in the righteousness of Christ if we are to stand, acceptably before God. The apostle Paul said he desired to be found in Christ, “ . . . not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” (Phil 3.9.).   When we possess this righteousness, we’re saved and stand ready to manifest in our conduct a righteous life. Without the righteousness of Christ in us, we cannot manifest the righteous conduct in a true sense of the word.

Christ found people in his day on Earth who had only their own righteousness, and he tells us that our righteousness must exceed or excel theirs (Matt. 5.20). Excel it in what sense? In quantity? No! But in quality or kind. The righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees was ritualistic; not based upon the spirit of Christ. In other words, it was not the righteousness of Christ imputed to them. Their righteousness was the  kind of Paul said he did not want to be found clothed in, as it was not by faith in Christ. When a man comes to God by faith in Christ, he is then clothed with Christ’s righteousness.  The Bride of Christ is seen by John in his  Patmos vision to be “ . . . arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” (Rev. 19.8). Here the view is twofold. First, the Saints, who compose the Bride, possess the righteousness of Christ and therefore are saved. Second through this righteousness they have on fine linen,  clean and white because they are not found clothed in their own righteousness, and have conformed their life to the deep flowing impulses from the Spirit of God. Day by day every Christians conduct should bespeak to others, a living sacrifice, wholly acceptable unto God. By what is known as travel photograph, the slightest variation of tone can be detected. By the Lord’s instrument, the Bible, our conduct is measured. What we do, willl have far more weight for the world than what we say. Someone has said, What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say.” To the unsaved person, although he may not mean to do so, but by his conduct, he is saying to the loved ones and associates, “Let’s go to the place of torment.” This is true because he is actually going in that direction,  “[B]e not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” as Paul says in Romans 12:2 .

Well, my time is up and thank you so very much. And may God bless you. Tune in again at this same time next week.

What is Your Foundation?

I was reading the Bible today, and the following verses encouraged me.

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy” Psalm 61:2-3 I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed this week. There were many years that I have read this Psalm before I got the full blessing out of this verse. Notice what the verse says. It  says “the rock”. It does not say “a rock”.

Jesus Christ is the rock!

I Corinthians 10:4 speaking of the children of Israel tells us,“And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

In life rocks crumble, circumstances change, and the seemingly unmovable staples in our lives fail. But Jesus Christ never changes (Heb. 13.8)! He is always true and dependable (Rev. 19.11)!

Proverbs 30 tells us that the conies (or rabbits) are wise. It tells us that “ The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;” (30.26). We as humans are also fragile creatures, and if we are wise we will make Jesus our habitation.

Psalm 71:3 reads, “Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:24, “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” When we build our lives on Jesus and what He tells us (Col. 3.16), then we are wise, then we are building our house on the rock!

Thoughts about Church:

Peter, the Apostle Peter, tells us about the Lord’s house, the Lord’s Church, “ Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, . . .Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.”( I Pt.1.5-6).

He writes, “ye also” or “you also” are built up a spiritual house. This is the Lord’s Church. What is the Lord’s Church built on? It is the chief cornerstone. Who is the chief cornerstone? “ . . . Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;”(Eph. 2.20).

What did Jesus build His house on? He didn’t build his house on anything that would crumble! He told Peter, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matt. 16.18).

Jesus didn’t tell Peter that he was “the rock”. Peter was a little stone (for that is what his name means). Jesus told Peter that His Church was built on Christ, (Who Peter mentioned in verse 16) and that the gates of Hell will not prevail against what He would build. And this is also encouraging. Jesus promised that there would always be a light in this world through one of His Churches.
Hope you are all having a blessed this week. If you would like please also read further testimony of Peter of Who the Church is built on as I have highlighted it here: https://whenravenscry.wordpress.com/2020/12/14/who-did-jesus-build-his-church-on/

(Peter also writes that the Lord’s Church is also made of little stones built on Jesus, the chief cornerstone I Peter 1:5-6.)

The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; . . . The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.” II Samuel 22:3;47

Thoughts on the Things that are Built in Our lives

Ephesians 4:29 reads, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Edify means to build up, to construct, or improve. Our words are supposed to improve the hearers. Our words should bring people closer to the Lord, and to improve good things. I was just thinking about edifying and how we are supposed to edify one another.

Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.” Romans 15:2

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,” Jude 1:20

Hebrews 3:13 reads, “But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

The Bible teaches us that we each give our strength to something. We each build up or give our strength to something. But it instructs  us to give our strength to the Lord (Ps. 29.1). If we don’t give our strength to the Lord we end up giving it to wickedness.

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” Romans 6:16

Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;

And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;” Proverbs 5:10-12

Strengthening our brethren is also a way of giving our strength to the Lord.

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40

Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

The Lord told Simon Peter that when his faith had been tried to do this.

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.” Luke 22:32

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25

Not giving our strength to the Lord  may cause something else to be built.

We may not actively be doing something contrary to the Lord, but not giving our strength to the Lord may cause something else to be built.

Proverbs 24:30-34 reads, “I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;  And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.” Through neglect the stone wall was broken and the weeds took over the ground. The Lord also said that if He drove out all the inhabitants of Canaan at once, the wild animals would come in (Ex. 23:29-30).  When we aren’t doing what the Lord wants us to be doing, it gives place for something else to come in. The Devil is seeking whom he may devour (I Pt. 5.8). He wants ground. Jesus said,“ . . .Occupy till I come.” (Luke 19.13).

Sometimes tearing down is a part of edifying.

There are multiple steps to building. Sometimes you need to tear down things to build them up!  Paul  told Timothy to “ . . . reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.” (II Tim. 4.2). Gideon had to throw down his father’s altar to Baal (Judges 6:25-26), before he built an altar to the Lord.  Many times we need to get rid of things in our own life so we can serve the Lord better.

Tearing down isn’t a substitute for building up the things of God.

Reprove and rebuke are mentioned more than exhorting in this verse. This may indicate how much we need to get rid of before we build up. But the job is also incomplete if we don’t build up what the Lord wants us to. The Bible says that there were some who just delighted in tearing down (Ps. 63.4, Pr. 22.28). Judas found fault with the woman anointing Jesus with ointment, because “it wasn’t given to the poor” (John 12.4-5). Pretty soon the others found fault too (Matt. 26. 8-10). The Bible also says that the froward (those that go away; opposite of toward) find no good (Pr. 17.20).   It isn’t always the Spirit of God that finds fault. While tearing down often needs to be done, we need to encourage each other too.

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25

These have been just a few thoughts.

God bless!

On I John 5:7, The Missing Scripture, and Christ’s Deity

I John 5:7 in the King James Bible reads,  “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Did you know that many versions of the Bible omit this verse? This includes the NIV, The ESV, The American Standard Bible, The World English Bible, the NRSV. It is also missing (along with many other Scriptures) in the Jehovah Witness’ New World Translation. Check this out on Bible Gateway if you don’t believe me. That is http://www.biblegateway.com It is often taught that all Bibles are the same. Knowing this, do you think that this is the case?

This is the work of the Devil. It is an attack on the deity of Christ. Some of the newer Bibles say they left it out because that it is not found in any manuscript before the 14th century. Tertullian quoted it in 200 AD in his Against Praxeas in  chapter 25. It was also included in the “Waldensian,” or “Vaudois” Bibles which stretch from the 150s to the 1400s AD.

The doctrine of I John 5:7 is so important. Jesus explains in John 8:24 “ I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

“Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.” I John 2:22-23

I would also like to talk about the importance of what this Scripture teaches.

“They are one.”

Jehovah Witnesses They believe that Jesus is a god. Not the one and only true God. They have another Jesus, not the Jesus of the Bible.

I John 5:7 plainly states that “these three are one”. It plainly teaches that Jesus is God, not “a god”.

Joel 2:32 (in the Old Testament) tells us, “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD[JEHOVAH] shall be delivered:

Whenever the King James Bible writes “LORD” in all capitals it is translated from the Hebrew Jehovah. This is the name for God in the Old Testament. It is the name for God the creator.

Well Peter explains in Acts chapter two, “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel . . . And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (2.16;21)

He continues in Acts chapter four: “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said . . . Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. . .Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (4.8-12).

Peter says that whoever calls on the name of the Lord (Jehovah) shall be saved. He then says that there is no salvation in any other name. This proves that Jesus Christ is not “a god”, but the one and true God. He is the same God from the Old Testament.

“These three includes Jesus”.

Muslims also have a problem with I John 5:7. But they take it in the opposite direction of Jehovah Witnesses.  They think that Jesus was not God, but a prophet. They think  Jesus was merely a man. The Bible tells us that Jesus was man (Matt. 1.1). He ate (Luke 42:24). He was tired (Matt. 8.24).  He was thirsty (John 19:28). He was a man, but He was more than just a man.

Muslims believe that the Bible is corrupt. They think it is useful for history but not religion. They say that there is only one god “Allah”.  They believe in a creator God, but they believe that Jesus cannot be God because of His death (among other things). Muslims  emphasize the oneness of God in stark opposition to I John 5:7 which they claim is corrupt.

What does the Bible say? As we have discussed already the Bible plainly teaches that Jesus is God. He is not a god. But what about “these three”? Does this verse teach three gods? No it does not. It teaches “these three are one”.

I’ve recently heard the argument that (some) Pagans believed in a triple god.  So that gives licence to ignore the Bible.  Well Pagans believe in creation. Many ancient  cultures besides Israel believed in a worldwide flood. Many  ancient cultures had a knowledge of Hell.. And some modern Pagans believe in the teachings of Sir Isaac Newton and gravity.  So just because Pagans believe in something it isn’t a reason or not a reason to believe it. Everyone will be judged not by what the heathen did or didn’t, but on what God said in His Word and what we did with it.

What about the Trinity?

What does trinity mean? It is not found in the Bible. It is a name Christians have used. It’s first documented use was in 200AD by Tertullian(Against Praxeas, ch.11,13,25). It comes from prefix “tri” meaning “three” (like in tricycle, triple, etc). . And it comes from the suffix “nity” like found in the word “unity”. Trinity  means “three-in-one”. It is not the same as what  Pagans believe.

The Bible does not teach three gods. It teaches one God.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:” Deuteronomy 6:4

I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:” Isaiah 45:5

I don’t think that this verse in Isaiah could be any clearer. The LORD is God, and there is none else.

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” I Timothy 2:5

But does the Bible teach that there is a difference between God the Father and Jesus?

Between 220 and 270 AD, there arose a man named Sabellius that taught that the Father, Son were identical. People who followed him were called Patripassians (Father-sufferers), because they believed the Father and Son were both on the cross.

But the Bible tells us that God cannot die. He is in fact life. He has all power.

I John 5:20 Isaiah 40:28-29, Isaiah 31:3  I Timothy 1:17, I Timothy 6:15-16,

Jesus died.

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore . . .” Revelation 1:18

God is the everlasting Father.

Consider Isaiah 9:6 It calls God the “ everlasting Father”. God was a Father from everlasting.

And John 17:24 reads, “Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

The only way for God to be an everlasting Father is for Him to have a Son from everlasting. He did, and the Bible says that  He loved that Son before the foundation of the world!

And Jesus loved His Father.

But that the world may know that I love the Father; “ John 14:31

Jesus is God and is sitting at the right hand of God.

This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted,” Acts 2:32-33

He is God, and He was with God from the beginning.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

Even the Hebrew word for God  “Elohim” is in the plural!

“[O]ut of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” Micah 5:2

Is the Holy Spirit Different Than God and Jesus?

I’ve learned that Jehovah Witnesses don’t believe that the Spirit of God is a person. They say He is like an arm, or  power, or energy or something.  But the Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is also God.

You can lie to the Holy Ghost. You can’t lie to an inanimate object. (Acts 5.3)

And lying to the Holy Ghost is lying to God.

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost . . . thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.” Acts 5:3-4

You can grieve the Holy Ghost. (Epheisans 4:30). You can’t grieve someone’s arm. You can’t grieve energy.

The Spirit of God has a will. I Corinthians 12:11.

You can sin against the Holy Ghost. This is different than sinning against Jesus.

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.” Matthew 12:30-31

Jesus said the Holy Ghost was a different person.

John 14:16-17 reads, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;  Even the Spirit of truth . . .”

For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” Ephesians 2:18

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.” II Corinthians 13:14”

So in conclusion the Bible teaches there is one God who is three distinct persons. Those three persons are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Those three persons make up the Godhead(Rom. 1.20). And we are baptized in their “name”, singular (Matt. 28.19).

Thoughts

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

We know that God loves us.

But do we love Him? These are two separate issues.

If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15

If we really love Jesus we will do what He says.

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” John 14:23

The Lord said, “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.” Exodus 25:8

The Lord said about Abraham and his children,  “And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do . . . For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.”  Genesis 18:17-19

The children of Israel kept the ways of the Lord, and He came and dwelt with them. Jesus said His Father and He would come and make their abode with those that love Him and keep His commandments. There is more than one kind of abode, but I  believe that to those that love the Lord He will also dwell with them and give them a place to worship. He had a house in the Old Testament as well as the New. The Bible tells us that no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” Psalm 89:10-11

I remember talking to a missionary once and he told me that when he went to Finland that there was someone there already seeking to find the right way. They knew that the Church in Finland was not right.

It also seems to me that the Bible teaches that God gives more of His Word to those that love it.

Psalm 119:100 reads, “I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.”

I read in Proverbs 2:7-8, “He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.

This verse says that the Lord lays up sound wisdom for the righteous. The word layeth up comes from the Hebrew word, “tsâphan”. Strong’s Concordance has this to say about it: “a primitive root; to hide (by covering over); by implication, to hoard or reserve; figuratively to deny; specifically (favorably) to protect . . .”

The Lord stores up and protects wisdom for the righteous. What is wisdom? Deuteronomy 4:5-6 tells us, “Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the Lord my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom . . .

Proverbs 2:7-8 also says that he keeps the paths of judgment.  The word keep is translated from the Hebrew word “nâtsar”. Strong’s Concordance has this to say about it: “a primitive root; to guard, in a good sense (to protect, maintain, obey, etc.) or a bad one (to conceal, etc.):—besieged, hidden thing, keep(-er, -ing), monument, observe, preserve(-r), subtil, watcher(-man).”

The Lord guards and keeps the paths of judgment. To me this speaks of the Word of God.  Psalm 119: 105 reads, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Proverbs 4:11-13 says,“I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.

When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.”

I believe the Lord protects and stores up His Word for those that love it, and will keep it.

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;

Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;

 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:1-5

James 1:5 reads, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

These have been just a few thoughts. God bless.
