A couple of weeks ago I wrote on some things that I learned in school. I mentioned that like a virus, sin doesn’t only harm us. It harms others as well. I mentioned that Achan’s secret sin caused the deaths of others, even his own family (Josh. 7).
When we think of sins, (or at least I do in this regard) we typically think of sins one commits.
But James 4:17 tells us,“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” When God specifically tells us to do something, and we don’t do it, it is sin!
What are some things God told us to do?
God told us to pray.
Samuel said that it would be a sin to stop praying for his nation Israel. “Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:” I Samuel 12:23
Prayer helps!
Paul said, “Ye also helping together by prayer for us . . .” II Corinthians 1:11
“And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. . . .
[P]ray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:15-16
I Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to, “Pray without ceasing.”
I Kings 8:37-39 tells us,“If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust, or if there be caterpiller; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness there be;
What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:
Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)”
Mark 9:29 shows that prayer and fasting helped when other things failed. Prayer and fasting is a powerful weapon!
I remember coming across a video in school where King George VI of Britain called on the whole nation to pray during Word War II. This was about a week before the Battle of Dunkirk, a turning point in the war. Can we learn something from them?
God told us to grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” II Peter 3:18
How do we do this? II Peter 1:3-4 tells us,“ According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises . . .” This verse tells us that God’s divine power has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness.
Where are these things? II Timothy 3:16-17 tells us,
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
Simply put, God told us to study the word of truth. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” II Timothy 2:15
Colossians 3:16 also tells us to let the word of Christ dwell in us richly. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
I like to read through the book of Proverbs every month. There are thirty-one chapters, and each can correspond to day. I remember one day that I put off reading the Bible. That same day someone asked me where the Bible said that “Wine is a mocker.” That day was the twentieth of the month. Later I got around to reading the Proverb. Proverbs twenty verse one reads, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” Had I chose to not put off my Bible reading that day, I could have been a better witness!
I Timothy tells us that reading and meditating (thinking) about the Bible makes a difference. “ Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy . . . Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” I Timothy 4:14-16
In the law it was not only up to the religious leaders of the people to keep and read the Bible. In Deuteronomy 17:18-19 the kings also were supposed to make a copy and keep it with them all their days.
Revelation 5:10 reads, “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”
It was also the job of fathers, mothers, and grandparents to keep and teach the word of the Lord.
“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.” Deuteronomy 6:6-9
It is not just the job of Pastors to read the word of God. The job is also mine and yours!
The Lord wants us to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together.
Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us, “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
One thing the verse says is to do it so much more as we see the day that we meet our Saviour approaching. If we think that we are going to be ready to meet the Lord soon, we need to be in the Lord’s house so much the more.
Matthew 18:20 tells us, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
One place the Lord said He would be is in the midst of His Church.
When we don’t go to Church what does it do to our witness?
“. . .In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” II Corinthians 13:1
Ephesians 5:25-26 tells us, “[E]ven as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,”
How important was the Church to Jesus? How important should it be to us?
These are just some things to think on. God bless!
