Set on Fire of Hell

Hello everyone. I was just praying, and I believe the Lord laid this on my heart to post again. I couldn’t get it out of my head. This is something I wrote a while ago. God bless.

Proverbs 11:11 reads, “By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.” The mouth of the wicked can overthrow a city. I was also recently reading James 3 verse six. “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” James 3:6

Sometimes men’s tongues can destroy, and James tells us that a tongue can be set on fire of hell. This reminds me of Peter in Matthew chapter 16. He told Jesus to not to go to the cross, and Jesus responded with “Get thee behind me, Satan . . .” Sometimes people can say good things to us. Sometimes people can say smooth sounding things to us. Sometimes the people might be decent people (like Peter). But that doesn’t mean what they are saying to us is coming from God. We can’t rest on the words of men. We always need to evaluate what is said in the light of the Word of God.  James speaks on “set on fire of Hell.” This got me to thinking “What does the Bible say about Hell?”

What does the Bible say about Hell?

The Bible which is the word of God, says a few things about Hell. There are many verses in Scripture that speak on what happens after this life. Many speak of the grave to which all men go.  But, is that all? Please consider the following verses. It is good to know why we believe what we believe, and what the Bible says on a matter.

In the book of Job, (which is said to be the oldest book in the Bible), we read about hell. Job 11:18 says, “It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?” Does “as high as heaven and deeper than the grave” really fit here?

Isaiah an Old Testament prophet talked about a coming judgment. “And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord. And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.” (66:23-24).

Isn’t this also the exact thing that Jesus warned men of in the days of his earthly ministry ?  “[I]t is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:” Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched”(Mark 9.43-44).

He also warned that there was something worse than the death of the body. “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:29

Some dismiss every time the Bible speaks about hell. They believe it is referring to obliteration, and not torment.

What does the Word of Christ say? Jesus spoke of a man in hell. In Luke 16:23-24 we read, “And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments . . .And he cried and said . . . I am tormented in this flame.

And this is by no means the only reference to this torment in Hell in the Bible.

Revelation 14:11 is a witness to us, “And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.”

Revelation 14:9-10 reads, “And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

Furthermore the Bible repeatedly refers to Hell as unquenchable fire.

Matthew 3:12 reads “Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Matthew 18:8 speaks of being “ . . . cast into everlasting fire.”

If hell were obliteration then it seems like the fire would go out eventually.

The Bible tells us that there is only one way to escape from Hell.

“For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.” Psalm 86:13

Joel 2:32 tells us, “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD[JEHOVAH] shall be delivered:

Peter explains in Acts chapter two, “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel . . . And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (2.16;21)

He continues in Acts chapter four: “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said . . . Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. . .Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (4.8-12).

And who are we to call on to be saved?

“[A]nd they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” Matthew 1:23
We are to call upon the Lord God Jesus Christ.

Romans 10:9-10 tells us, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

“Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” Hebrews 1:3-4

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:18

What the Bible Says about Righteousness

Righteousness delivers from wrath.

Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.” Proverbs 11:4

Righteousness delivers us from death, and in the pathway of righteousness there is no death.

In the way of righteousness is life: and in the pathway thereof there is no death.” Proverbs 12:28

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.” Proverbs 10:2

In the Lord men can have righteousness.

Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come . . .” Isaiah 45:24

[T]heir righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.” Isaiah 54:17

The Bible tells us that there is none righteous.

For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Ecclesiastes 7:20

[A]ll our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Isaiah 64:6

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” Romans 3:10

The Bible teaches that we need to have the Lord’s righteousness to escape wrath.

[T]he soul that sinneth, it shall die.” Ezekiel 18:4

“[A]nd when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.” Exodus 12:13

The Bible tells us that He would become our salvation.

The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation . . .” Exodus 15:2

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2

The Lord said that He Himself would save His people from the power of the grave.

I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.” Hosea 13:14

But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave . . .” Psalm 49:15

The Lord said He would bring his righteousness, and would place his salvation.

I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not tarry: and I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory.” Isaiah 46:13

Believing in the Lord counts to us righteousness.

And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” Genesis 15:6

Jesus said, “ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”(John 3.16).

The Bible says that every one since Adam and Eve (the first man and woman) has sinned or has done evil (Rom. 3.23). And because of sin that person has to pay the death penalty. (Ezek. 18:4).  That is death of the body in the ground, and death of the soul, which is eternity in Hell. “The wicked shall be turned into hell . . .” (Ps. 9.17)

But, God loved us so much, that He provided a means of escape. God became man, to pay for the sins of mankind (John 1.1; John 1:14; I Timothy 3:16). His name is Jesus Christ. He was born of a virgin woman named Mary, and never sinned. He is the Son of God, and is 100% God, and 100% man.

He gave up His life, on the cross. He did this so that anyone who believes in Him, and  asks for forgiveness, would never perish, but have everlasting life. And He will wash our sins away.

[A]nd this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord Our Righteousness.” Jeremiah 23:6

Jesus rose from the grave, three days later, proving He is God, and that He has the power over death.  When we ask Him into our heart, He promises us that we will live forever. When this life is over we will go on living in Heaven with God, and He will raise up our bodies in the last day.

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” Revelation 3:19

If you have never asked Jesus into your heart, and would like to, you could ask God this:

Dear God,

Your word says that I’m a sinner. That I’ve done bad things. It also says you gave Jesus, to save me from my sins. It also says that, He is the only way to you. I believe you. Please forgive me of my sins, and come into my heart and  save me

In the name of Jesus, I ask.

Amen.

Set on Fire of Hell

Today is the eleventh of April. And on this day I read the eleventh Proverb. It has a lot to say about the tongue.

The Name of God

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;  . . . And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:.  . .  And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:14-21

Peter here quotes a passage from Joel 2,

And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. . . And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered:” Joel 2:29-32

Now in the King James Bible, when we read the “LORD” with all capital letters we know  it is translated from the Hebrew word “Jehovah”.

Now, Peter is again questioned in Acts chapter four.

And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,

If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:7-12

First Peter says that whosoever shall call upon the name of the LORD shall be saved. He then declares that there is no salvation in any other name than the name of “Jesus Christ”.

Was not the name Jehovah given? Was it not known among men? It certainly was.

And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the Lord:

And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them.” Exodus 6:2-3

Jesus Himself said “ I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6

Notice Jesus did not say “go unto the Father”. Jesus said “come unto the Father”.

Think about it.  You can “go” to someone else.  But you can’t “come” unless the person speaking is present.

This is Jesus’ own words.  I am not asking you to trust my words. If we can’t trust the witness of God the Father, and the witness of His Son, who can we trust?

Isaiah 42:8 declares plainly, ”I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Yet we read in Philippians 2:9-11, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

If Jesus’ Christ were anyone else but God, this would not glorify Him.

And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.” Exodus 23:13

Worshipping anyone or anything besides God is sin!

And they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.” II Kings 17:16

Acts 20:28 says, “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”

So many have tried to make themselves a god. But, the Lord God is not like any other. The LORD in His greatness became a man.

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2

For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.” Hebrews 2:16

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.” Psalm 8:5

God promised in Hosea, “ I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.” Hosea 13:14

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:” Hebrews 1:2-3

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” Hebrews 9:14

When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” Matthew 8:16-17

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” Hebrews 2:9

Jesus Christ is no less than God manifest in the flesh. He is not some angel. He is not merely a prophet or another man.

We read in Matthew 1:23, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Others may do differently. But my God didn’t send someone else to do the job. He came and did it Himself.

“ The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.” Isaiah 52:10

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?” John 14:9

Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.” I John 2:22-23
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.” I John 5:9-10
