A Scripture for Today, November 2nd, 2021

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” Psalm 1

If God be for Us, Who can be against us?

 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31

“[F]or God hath power to help, and to cast down.” II Chronicles 25:8

If God be for us, none can be against us. But what if God were against us?

In the 25th chapter of the second book of Chronicles we read of King Amaziah, the king of Judah. This was after the time of Solomon, when Israel split into two kingdoms: The nothern  kingdom of Israel, and the southern kingdom of Judah, who followed the descendants of King David.

Amaziah, was going up to battle the children of Edom, and hired an hundred thousand men, of Israel to go up with him, when a man of God came to him.

But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.

 But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.

 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.

 Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.

 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand.” (II Chronicles 25:7-11)

God wrought a great victory through Amaziah when he was on God’s side, but the king soon turned.

Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.

 Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?

And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.” (14-16)

After this came a great battle, and the armies of Judah were put to flight against their enemies.

Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there. And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.” (27-28)

God has power to help and to cast down. If we want the victory let us be sure we are on the right side!

God bless.

A Scripture for Today, November 2, 2017

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;

Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;

 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.

 For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.” Proverbs 2:1-6
