Thoughts on Strife and Other Things

Proverbs 17: 14 says, “The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

The verse says that the beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water. Now it is difficult if not nearly impossible to put all the water back into a container after it has been spilled. You could mop it up and wring it out, but would every drop go back?

The verse also warns to leave off contention before it be meddled with. Part of the meaning of meddling is “to mix”. I was thinking of when you mix something in water. When you mix koolaid with water in practicality (without lab equipment) it’s impossible to unmix.

And this made me think that it might be nearly impossible to take some things back once they are said.

Words can wound a person. Proverbs 18:18 and Proverbs 26:22 both say, “The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.”  Proverbs 12:25 reads, ”Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.”

While it is good practice to have tough skin, the Bible teaches that we sometimes should refrain our lips. And the Lord warns us about not speaking hurtful things.

When someone hurts us, we know we sometimes don’t want to get over it right away. Proverbs 18:19 reads, “A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.”

Instead of causing strife, we can get rid of strife.

Proverbs 15:18 reads,“A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.” Being slow to anger seems to be like water to fire. Being slow to anger can appease strife.

The Bible also tells us some ways to avoid causing strife.

Proverbs 26:21 reads, “As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.” Part of the meaning of the word contentious is “contest”. Making something into a contest is a way to cause strife.

And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.” Luke 22:24

One way to avoid strife is to not be a talebearer.

Proverbs 26:20 reads,“Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.”

Proverbs 16:27-28 tells us, “An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire. A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.”

Both whisperer and  talebearer in these Scriptures are translated from the same Hebrew word.

Proverbs 17:9-10 reads, “He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.

When we keep bringing up past transgressions we cause trouble. The Lord doesn’t want us to be like that. He doesn’t do that to us. And people do change. When the Lord reproves one of His obedient children that love Him they have a tendency to listen and change. The Devil surely would like to  point out the people that don’t change, but God wrote down in His Word that it is not true of everyone. I was also thinking that  babies act differently as they get older.  When they grow up they no longer wear diapers. I know that as I got older I cared when I saw my Mom doing the dishes without help. When I was a kid, I didn’t necessarily think that someone in the house needed to do dishes. I just wanted to play.  People as they grow in the Lord, they may realize and understand more things when they are first saved. Lost people may have no power to stop sinning, but God’s people do change.  And Jesus saw how we-His-people, and also  His Church would be and looked to that day (Heb. 12.2; Matt.13.46 ).

Now Micah 6:8 reads, “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

II Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

The Lord loves mercy. He loves giving us less than we deserve. He is also willing that all men should come to repentance. When we get to the point where we don’t want to see someone turn around and do right, there is something wrong. Even in Church discipline the disciplining was done for a reason to restore (Gal. 6.1;I Cor. 5.5).

Not having a forgiving spirit gives place to the devil!

James 1:19-20 reads, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

Ephesians 4:26-27 reads“ Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

Neither give place to the devil.

The wrath of man  (opposed to the wrath of God) doesn’t work the righteousness of God. And  keeping our anger long gives the Devil room to work.   The Lord bids us not to give place to the Devil, and  we should watch ourselves for these things.

These have been just a few thoughts.

What to Think II: A Scripture for November 12th

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8

Recently I wrote on that the Lord tells us what to think on. I talked about how the Devil is the accuser of the brethren, and of how he tries to get us to think evil of God’s people.  But another enemy we have to fight in this battle is ourselves. Sometimes our old nature and sin will also cause us to think of things that aren’t true.

Obadiah 1:3 reads, “ The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee . . .”

In the Scriptures read about David and Saul. David did nothing to Saul. He was loyal to Saul. Yet Saul became jealous over him, and imagined evil about him.
Proverbs 13:10 reads,  “Only by pride cometh contention . . .

Proverbs 26:21 tells us, “ As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.”

And when we are contentious we kindle strife. Now being contentious can cause others to be angry. But, being contentious can also make us angry at God’s people for no right reason.

Proverbs 30:33 says, ”Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter . . . so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.”

James 3:16 warns us “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

If we have trouble with one of the Lord’s people, we ought to ask the Lord if we have pride or envy in our heart. And we ought not rule it out as deception and perhaps the work of the Devil why we have this trouble!

Humility, Love, and Submission to God are the way to overcome the Devil and problems in this area.

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:6-7

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” I Corinthians 13:4-7

One of the godliest and wisest men I have ever been blessed to know, Bro. Grover Laird, once preached a message on things we ought to pray for every single time we pray. Two of those things that he thought was so important were asking the Lord for humility, and asking Him to help us love more.

These have been just a few thoughts. God bless.

Thoughts on Pride

Pride is something we need wary of.

It seems to hinder one coming to Jesus, and receiving salvation.

”And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:2-4

It stops us from receiving many blessings from the Lord after we our saved.

“But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” James 4:6

Those that are proud don’t seem to receive as many blessings.

When we are prideful, it  hinders our relationship with Him.
” Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.” Psalm 138:6

It seems that when we are prideful, we are less dependent upon God. Pride may hold up our prayer life.

” The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.” Psalm 10:4

We are dependant upon God for our lives.

Matthew Henry writes,

” Pride is a sin which men have reason to be themselves ashamed of; it is a shame to a man who springs out of the earth, who lives upon alms, depends upon God, and has forfeited all he has, to be proud.”

Everything we have we owe to the Lord Jesus Christ!
Everything we have is because of Him, even our very breath.

”If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;

All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.” Job 34:14-15
We ought to praise Him more and more!

Pride is an abomination to the Lord.

” Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.” Proverbs 16:5

Furthermore the Lord hates it.

”The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” Proverbs 8:13
See the end of the proud:
” For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 4:1-3

This is not the way a Christian, if we are yielding to the Spirit of God living within us, would act.

“But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.

But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:42-45

” Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:5-8

Let this mind be in you. God bless.

More on Discord, Contention, and Pride

Proverbs 6:16-19 tells us, ”These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

What is pride?

The definition of pride does not match up with the way we use it today. The Online Etymological Dictionary’s entry for pride reads,  “late Old English pryto, Kentish prede, Mercian pride “pride, haughtiness, pomp . . .”

Similarly according to this dictionary haughty means, “proud and disdainful . . . high in one’s own estimation. . .”

Proverbs 13:10 tells us,  Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.” By this we know that pride is the main cause of contention.
What does contention mean? Part of the meaning of the word means “contest”. The Bible also speaks of being contentious. Contentious is to be making a contest out of everything.

Proverbs 30:33 says, ”Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.”

Obadiah 1:3  says, “The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee . . .

We read in Proverbs 12:20, “Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil . . .

In the Scriptures read about David and Saul. David did nothing to Saul. He was loyal to Saul. Yet Saul became jealous over him, and imagined evil about him.

Proverbs six speaks of “he that soweth discord among brethren”. In Matthew 13 we find the Devil “sowing” tares. If anyone is trying to sow discord among the Lord’s people, we can be sure that he has his hand in it. The Devil surely wants to cause trouble among the Lord’s people.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” I Peter 5:8

And one of the tricks the Devil has used since the beginning is pride.

A bishop then must be . . . Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.” I Timothy 3:2,6

In Acts chapter five we read how Satan put things into people’s hearts.

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?” Acts 5:3

In Revelation 12:9-10 we read that the Devil is both a deceiver, and “the accuser of our brethren”.

“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.  And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” Revelation 12:9-10

There surely have been (and are still) a lot of false accusations made against the Lord’s people. The enemy accused Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and wanted them to be thrown in the fire, but the Son of God was with them. The enemy accused Daniel and wanted him to be thrown to the lions, but God shut the lion’s mouth.

Psalm 22:13 says, ”They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.

Notice that the verse in Revelations says that the devil accused them “before” our God.  Now this can mean that he accused them to God before Him in Heaven.

It can also mean that God sees everything. He has seen every one of his accusations, He has numbered them, and that the day of his judgment is coming.

If we have trouble with one of the Lord’s people, we ought to ask the Lord if we have pride in our heart. And we ought not rule it out as deception and perhaps the work of the Devil why we have this trouble!

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6: 12

Humility and Submission to God the way beat the Devil.

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:6-7

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,  Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” I Corinthians 13:4-7

Nevertheless, pride is a sin that any of us can easily fall into.

I John 2:16  tells us, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

One of the godliest and wisest men I have ever been blessed to know, Bro. Grover Laird, once preached a message on things we ought to pray for every single time we pray. One of those things that he thought was so important was asking the Lord for humility.

The Bible places so much weight on this. The Scripture says that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Pride holds up so much of the Lord’s work. It also divides God’s people. And it surely is something we all need to invest a lot of time in prayer for.

Thoughts

Just Some Scriptures

These are just a collection of thoughts I’ve had written down when studying some Scriptures on pride.

“Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.”
Psalm 101:5

Slander means to lie about, or to defame.  King David wrote this about himself, but we can trust that the Lord will do the same.
The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:” Psalm 12:3
We should know that it is wrong to bear false witness.
Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.” Psalm 123:4

Those that give God’s people trouble, are often at ease. Or they have it easy. They literally have nothing else to do.

I Timothy 5:13 says something similar,
“And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.”

Proverbs 21:4 says,
An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.”
The word “high”, from high look comes from a word that is also translated as haughtiness. Is a high look what we would consider “turning up one’s nose” today?

God’s  people often have had people turn up their noses up at them.
”[H]e that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.” Proverbs 29:27

“Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:” I Peter 1:4
But, this is one way we Christians should never be.

Proverbs 16:5 says,  “Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord…”
The Apostle Paul said, “But by the grace of God I am what I am:…” I Corinthains 15:10 (see also I Peter 1:3, Luke 18:11)

“Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.” Proverbs 13:10

Pride causes  many arguments, and many conflicts.
He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the Lord shall be made fat.” Proverbs 28:25

” And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient…” II Timothy 2:24-25
Ecclesiastes 7:8  says, “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.”

When someone does something to you, it is human nature to want to do it back. Butt is better to be patient, than proud. In the end in will be worth it.
Proverbs 24 verses 28, and 29 say this:
” Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips. Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.”

When someone does something to hurt us, we should give it to the Lord.

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.” Proverbs 20:22

For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.  For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:  Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”

I Peter 2:19-24

These have been just a few thoughts.

God bless!

Thoughts on Knitting and the Bible

“That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2.2-3

The Bible tells us that God knit his Church in love. I sometimes like to think about that while I am knitting.

Now there are different fiber arts. In addition to knitting, there is crochet, and some others. They are each constructed differently.

In knitting the item is made all of one thread. And the same thread that makes each stitch, is around, through, and joins each stitch together. This reminds me of the Lord’s Church.

“One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” Ephesians 4.6

Knitting more so than these others needs to be done the right way.

If one stitch drops, or is disjoined from other stitches, it needs to be fixed.

I noticed that part of my knitting had fallen out this morning. I knew I needed to go fix it or else the whole thing would unravel.

It made me thank that if God tells us there is a problem, we need to go back to where the problem started and fix it.  No matter what it is.

In knitting our work won’t be right until we do, and nothing we do for the Lord will be right until we do. Everything we do from then on will have problems. And it will unravel.

The Lord admonishes us,  “Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.” Matthew 5.23-24

When Achan had the hidden sin in his tent, Israel couldn’t stand before her enemies. She couldn’t move on until she got things right with God. (Josh. 7)

It won’t just effect the new work, it will cause the old to unravel.

If a stitch is dropped in knitting, it can unravel in either direction.

Even though Solomon built the temple, and did a lot to encourage people to worship the Lord, that was unraveled somewhat when his heart went astray and he built altars to the false gods of his wives. ( I Kings 11.6-8) If one sheep of a flock goes out of the way, other sheep may wander after it.

“A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” Galatians 5:9

If there is a problem, we also just can’t just let things stay the way they are.

Why is that? The world doesn’t just sit still. And something will pull on your work. Even if you put your work in a bag in the back of a closet where no one will see it, you can come back and your work still will be unraveled.

If we have something that isn’t right with God, the world will pull on us. And it can affect things we have already done for the Lord.

“The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.” Proverbs 14.14

And if a problem sits too long, everything becomes a tangled mess.

If you let your work sit around, undone, when you come back you are likely to find a tangled mess.  And nothing is pretty anymore. And if you want to move forward you have to fight for every inch.

The Proverb tells us of a man who let his vineyard sit, and it became overgrown with thorns. (Prov. 24.30-34).

This doesn’t mean that it isn’t’ worth the effort! It took a while for Nehemiah, Ezra, and God’s people, to rebuild the walls and the Temple, but it was an important work.

One thing we need to fight against is pride.

In the Bible pride is the reason why there is division, and things unravel!

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.” Proverbs 13.10

And pride stops the Lord’s work from being done.

“[T]here are contentions among you. . . every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.” I Cor. 1.11-12

So if we want to fight against division, and if we want the Lord’s work to continue, we will not allow pride to rule us.

These have been just a few thoughts.

God bless you this day!

Thoughts

Thoughts on Psalm 19:12-14

“Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:12-14

“Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.”

Sometimes we do wrong, and don’t even know it. But that doesn’t mean that our sin doesn’t affect us, or others. In Joshua chapter seven the children of Israel had a secret sin in their camp. It cost them to lose the battle. It caused trouble not only for Achan, who took something God told him not to take, but also for the whole congregation and his own family.

Sometimes faults are secret, but not to us.

If we know of a sin, we should get it out of our lives immediately.

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” Proverbs 28:13

“Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me:”

What does the word presumptuous mean?  It comes from the Hebrew word “Zed”, and twelve out of the thirteen times it is used, it is translated as “proud”. The dictionary tells us that it means “arrogantly”, and “insolently” or “proudly and haughtily”.  Presumptuous also means “Unduly confident; irreverent with respect to sacred things.”

Words before thoughts, or thoughts before words?

David writes in the next verse, “let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart…” This always seemed backward to me.  To me it seems that you think words before you speak. But how often do we speak before thinking? This is especially true when pride becomes involved!

David asks the Lord to keep him back from presumptuous sins, and not let them have dominion over him. He didn’t want to be controlled by pride.

My friend, a Pastor’s wife, once  shared a Scripture with me. “Only by pride cometh contention . . .” Proverbs 13:10  She said that pride is the cause of many fights.

Like David we need to pray for God to control our tongues.  And we ought to pray that our thoughts and actions would not be controlled by pride.

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14

On Pride

 If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” Proverbs 8:13
